Ballast is the coarse aggregate that gives concrete its bulk and strength. This crushed stone is graded to the 14–20mm range used for reinforced concrete slabs, columns, beams, strip foundations and mass concrete.
A standard 1:2:4 structural mix (cement:sand:ballast) consumes roughly 8 tonnes of ballast per 50 bags of cement, so ordering by the tonne lets you match deliveries to your pour schedule and avoid double handling.
